We had a superb breakfast at Hotel Berna Meats, cheeses, fruits of all kinds and of coarse croissants. We say our good byes and off to the train station we go. of course I take a graceful tumble right in the middle of main street flopping my luggage everywhere. stopping traffic. I look up and some kind people rush to help me up. Looking at the street and then my shoes, I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. Too many chocolate croissants!
We arrive at the train station amongst hoards of people from everywhere in the world. It makes for great people watching. Everyone seems to be looking up at the train boards to figure out where they are going.
We are going to experience our first train ride so we are in a quandry as to where we are going and asking every official which train and track we are to take. It is time to board the train and find our coach, and cabin which are numbered with seats on the glass.
Our first travel mates were a family of 5 (3 boys) from Treviso. We had the typical language barrier, with our little Italian and their limited English, we managed to communicate. Wanting to share where we were living, we used Google Earth to show our residences, which opened up more questions.
At the next stop which was Genoa, three Italian women got on and one had a dog, Olivia. They were “chatty Cathy’s”. We arrived in Ventimiglia and a couple got on for the final segment on the regional train to Nice. They were the most beautiful French couple we have ever seen. We couldn’t keep from admiring them.
We arrive in Nice and we know it isn’t too far to our hotel, which was down towards the beach. We arrive at Hotel Gounod to check in. To our surprise we are upgraded to the spa hotel next door, Hotel Splendid.
We took a short catch of breath, freshened up and walked to the Massena promenade for dinner.
This place has lots of open air seating, people everywhere with lots of restaurants. just sitting out enjoying the moment.
On the way we encountered a local artist who used “spray” cans to create a work of art. People were drawn to watch this guy work his magic on canvas.
We find the restaurant restaurant La Pizza Crespi that had been recommended.
We ended up getting pizza Aubergine (egg-plant) and drinks for dinner. Afterwards we cross the main walk and order a gelato to go. Considering the large crowd at the restaurant we were served quickly. Then we walk back taking in all of the window shops in the area, admiring the displays.
